October, 2008 Wetlands Adventure!
As a direct extension to their year-long focus on environmental concepts, our 3rd and 4th grade students traveled to the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, New Jersey to learn more about the ocean and marsh habitats. The day began with a beach scavenger hunt where students explored the jetty, sand, and ocean current looking for living things that rely on the marsh and ocean habitats to fulfill their basic needs. Students discovered many creatures - great and small - and learned about the special adaptations each has for life in the marsh and ocean.
This exciting adventure was a culminating activity for our 3rd graders who are finishing up their year by studying birds and the specific characteristics and adaptations each has to help them fly, eat, and navigate. Our amateur ornithologists know that some birds migrate thousands
of miles - many stopping along the shore to gain much needed nourishment.
For our fourth grade aquatic ecologists, this trip was an opportunity to see how the fresh water in the Smith's Run (the stream at our school that they study all year) makes its way to the Schuylkill - the Delaware - and eventually the brackish marsh and the salty ocean. They also get to see, first hand, the many life forms that live at the beach. Third grade teacher, Juli Vitello, commented that the Wetlands Institute educators were truly impressed by the knowledge of our students. "The educators were blown away by what our kids know about the environment."
Green Woods would like to thank the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for granting us the funds to support this incredible learning experience for our students.

July 31, 2007 Governor's Award
On Tuesday, July 31st, DEP Secretary Kathleen McGinty trekked down to Green Woods Charter School to present the 2007 Governor’s Award to Green Woods Charter School. On hand for this special event, were former 4th graders; Siobhan Gleason, Miranda Meketon, Karly Bornstein, Jake Lotkowski, and Zack Merk. Green Woods was the only school in the state to receive this very prestigious award. This award was given to Green Woods for the “Watershed Year” in which our 4th grade students are immersed in a year-long study focusing on the local watershed. Working side-by-side with educators and experts at the Schuylkill Center, throughout the year, concepts outlined in the Pennsylvania Academic Standards relating to history, social studies, language arts, science and sustainable projects are incorporated into this study.
Students also learn about erosion, why the streambank needs plants, where to plant, what to remove, what to plant, and most importantly they learn the connection between a little stream in the woods and the water that comes from their tap. All their hard work culminates in June when they go fishing to Wind Dance Pond, which is very close to Smith’s Run Watershed where they worked so hard.
In the end the watershed year has taught them they are stewards of the land and what happens to the land can have an impact on the life that lives in our streams and ponds. Secretary McGinty challenged the students to always be good stewards of the environment by "using your brain and finding a solution."

Earth Day 2007 was a glorious day at Green Woods Charter
School! The weather was perfect, our students were focused
on the task at hand and our parents came out, in force,
to help us restore the environment that our children utilize
each day as an outdoor classroom. Our entire community
enjoyed an awesome assembly by award-winning author Jane
Kirkland. We raked, hoed, moved boulders, planted, cleaned
up, and removed invasive species to help give our native
plants a better chance to grow and thrive. We even enjoyed
picnic lunches with family and friends. Most importantly,
we did it together. Green Woods would like to extend a
hearty thank you to Peachy Kleen for helping to sponsor
this event. Thanks, too, to our friends and partners at
SCEE for providing their expertise to our students, parents,
and staff. Our 2nd Annual Earth Day, Day of Service to
the Environment was a huge success because everyone pitched
in to lend a helping hand. True to this year’s Earth Day
slogan, we really were “lean, green, planting
machines.” Click here to see the photo album.

October 25, 2006 - Green Woods
partners with PECO to restore Penn's Native Acres
On Wednesday October 25, Green Woods students worked side-by-side with employees from PECO/Exelon to restore an area of the Schuylkill Center's property known as Penn's Native Acres. The Schuylkill Center is trying to officially open this site to visitors so they have set a goal to do extensive plantings throughout the site. The students and their adult partners planted hundreds of native perennials and spring ephemerals to add lots of color.
